    "Ties" was the company magazine of the Southern Railway System. The first issue appeared in March 1947, and the last issue was published in 1982. You are bidding on an issue of "Ties" from July, 1949. The cover photo shows a diesel moving thru a cut along the French Broad River near the Tennessee/Kentucky border. Feature stories include Southern's transport annually of millions of fresh watermelons from Florida and Georgia to points north; a profile of the Southern yard office at Monroe (VA); working with Southern yard crews at Birmingham (AL); a new railroad bridge over Chickasaw Creek between Jackson and Mobile (AL); Southern's operations at Lexington (NC); a meeting of the 727th Railroad Operating Battalion , US Army, which served in World War II; others. The book has over 80 photos.

    Southern Railway System
    .
    The
    first issue appeared in March 1947,
    and the
    last issue was published in March 1982
    , at which time Southern merged with the Norfolk & Western Railway and "
    Ties"
    was discontinued. The magazine was
    published monthly through 1968
    ; it was issued
    every two months from 1968 through the last edition
    . It was considered to be
    among the finest of the railroad company magazines
    . All issues contain feature stories about railroad operations, company news, and many photographs; the later issues were printed in color, some with 2-page centerfold color photos.
