At the present there is a Tourist Development Project by Dr. BROWN MOTORCYCLE of 118 N.E.16th Ave. Portland Oregon 97232. ****
As hard economic times hit hard on this small town Dr Brown Motorcycles offered to help with the development of a tourist based economy.******
st As one drives into Dennisville (Total population of 517 happy citizens) they pass a large billboard on the right hillside honoring the founder.******
nd As we cross the train tracks on the edge of town my children tell me they see a farmer with a black and white cow in his truck, which they heard later at lunch had gotten loose and out of his farm yard. ******
rd Next the kids noticed a tow truck high on the hillside off to our left pulling a wrecked car up a cliff. We heard from a road worker that local kids having a party to late last night, had forgotten to set the brakes and it had rolled over the cliff and crashed. ******
th Just a little ways past the church they notice the restored old Gold Mine with a worker sitting on the high roof eating lunch and watching the work going on below. *******
th We see the large yellow CAT removing boulders and debris from the clear waters of the Stephen River. Kids notice everything, and point out there is a truck dumping bushes to plant around the gold mine. Then the worker with the stop sign waves us on.*******
th Next we see the police giving a ticket to a driver who had not stopped for the road worker holding and waving the stop sign. ****
th As we cross the railroad tracks entering the town we see two old white cannons displayed at the street corner.******
th The railroad station is up ahead and we hope to see the old steam engine and get a ride on it? But it is not running today. As we leave dad tells the kids there are new street lights that he did not remember the last time he was here.*******
th Oh there is a Dr Brown Motorcycle Race Van, it must be going to a motorcycle road race in Portland Oregon at
the Portland International Race Track
this weekend *******
th Then we drive toward Main Street, and the kids notice a old army green World War I tank and beg to stop and play on it but I tell them they have not seen the town and we are all very hungry ! ******
th So I stop at the gas station and asked were to go for a good lunch? The gas station owner tells us "go were the locals go, you have to drive up Main Street, then go through the tunnel under the railroad tracks out to the Dennis Lighthouse Cafe" ********
th So we went and had a great sea food lunch at very cheap prices ******
th The kids went around the cafe to check out the sea shore at the waters edge.********
th They came back and told me they heard the caretaker of the lighthouse which is only a few yards off shore, yelling a warning to the small sailboat with the number 17 on it's sail. The caretaker was at the top of the lighthouse checking on the broken railing when he had looked down and saw the small sailboat to close to the rocks on his small island.*****
th Some people watching told the kids the sailboat with the number 17 is in a race with the larger sailboat that is just ahead of his boat. The racer/sailor was using the narrow passage as a shortcut ,trying to catch the larger sailboat, the one with a sailor hanging far off the side on a rope line to help keep it stable in the wind.********
th Next the kids notice a large sailing ship by the mouth of the Stephen River.*********
th I have other ideas and want to drive over the wooden covered bridge to buy some wine from DR BROWN VINEYARD. I make the kids get back in the car and off we go to see more.***********
th The winery is a remodeled abandoned mission. On arriving at it the kids and I go around back to the river's edge.*******
th We hear a racing boat, number 17 starting up and I guessed it was probably going to go out the narrow river into the sea for a high speed test ? We heard that there is a large July 4th boat race to be run close by next weekend ********
th Then the kids see three people in a row boat enjoying the sunny day up river and want to rent one. Being I was not sure where to rent a small boatman tell the kids that there were other things to see and do and so off we went.*******
st Close by there is a large rusty cannon and a large old time sailing ship to look at. I lucked out and got a few minutes rest while the kids checked out the old sailing ship and cannon.********
nd Next they notice a huge pirate ship ( Tourist Trap ) but closed down, lucky for me! *********
rd Next the kids notice a barn with a pickup piled high with heavy timbers for building , maybe a new boat dock or fake gold mine shaft ? ***
th Next we drive up to the lake and campgrounds, high in the hills above town.********
th On the way we see a truck with a camper on it stopped in the road and as we slowly pass him, he tells us to stay clear of the dangerous wild black bull, just off the side of the steep road.********
th The kids are tired and hot and want to float on inner tubes on the lake and then camp out. I am tired and will fall asleep soon around the campfire! Tomorrow will be more fun again and we Love Dennisville.**** THE END ****
