Vir Das made history as the first Indian to host the International Emmy Awards. During his monologue at the 52nd International Emmys, held in New York on November 25, he humorously referenced actor Will Smith’s infamous Oscar slap incident, addressing OTT platforms for the low broadcast visibility of the Emmys. Vir shared the video on his Instagram handle on Tuesday.
Referencing Hollywood icon Will Smith’s infamous 2022 Oscars moment—where Smith slapped Chris Rock for a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith—Vir Das urged OTT platforms to stream the Emmys next year.
In his speech, he said, “All the major platforms are here and, humbly, I feel that next year, one of you should really broadcast this show. What do you think?” Vir continued amid cheers from the crowd. “Who does Will Smith have to slap tonight for us to get some eyeballs, guys?”

His caption read, “The first ever Indian hosted the International Emmys @iemmys he wore his old sneakers because he was nervous. He was Wearing @salookalife by a brand new young designer @thegirlwhostiched out of Delhi. He was styled by Stylist @shreejarajgopal who went through MANY emails to find the right designer to launch. He wore Jewels @hanut101 and wanted green to remind him of a DPS green tie. Photographed by @sarthak_kher (sic).”
